Much-loved Mamaku shopkeeper s retirement marked with large community celebration

That was the sentiment behind the large gathering of Mamaku residents who wished to farewell a much-loved iconic shop owner who has handed the reins to her niece after 18 years.
Rameela Patel, 57, has owned Mamaku Grocery Store since 2002 and worked in the store for 16 years before that when it was owned by her late parents Magan and Vimla Bala.
Her niece Vashti became the new owner last month.

The average life expectancy in the United States is 78.8 years, with women generally having a longer life expectancy than men. Most gaps in life expectancy can be explained by the risk factors that people engage in. The disparity between men and women, for example, is because women tend to engage in less risky behavior than men, and suffer fewer vehicular accidents.
People living in the Southern United States are more likely to be smokers, which is a leading cause of death. A 2016 American Cancer Society study found that cigarettes contribute to one in four cancer deaths in the country. Most of the 10 states with the highest attributable cancer deaths were located in the South, which explains why many of the states with the lowest life expectancies can also be found across the region.
Warm climates, cold shoulders
Recent weeks have seen ample public attention being given to snowbirds once again. Some older Canadians have decided to go south despite the ongoing pandemic and while various travel restrictions remain in place. Snowbirds are getting vaccinated in Florida, leaving some concerned about equity as Canadians receive vaccines before Floridians.
